Shri Guru Amar Das Ji
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji is the 3rd Sikh Guru. Guruji was the most aged Sikh Guru in Sikh religion, who got Guru Gaddi. Guru Amar Das Ji got Guru Gaddi at age of 73 years on 26 March,1552.
Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji, before his Jyoti Jyot, trusted Guru Ji with Guru Gaddi and made 3rd Guru.
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji was Born
On the day of 5 May, 1479, Basarke (in Amritsar). Guruji’s parents were Tej Bhan Bhalla Ji and Mata Lachmi. Guru ji has a very kind and calm nature. Guruji served his whole life to do Seva, educate people to follow God’s way and to become a good citizen.
Writings
Shri Guru Amar Das ji composed total 907 shabads and “Anand Sahib” (Bani). All writings of Guru Ji passed on to the 4th Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Ram Das Ji and are register in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
History
Before Guruji got Guru Gaddi, he always had a nature to serve towards Guru Angad Dev Ji. Everyday, Guru Ji brought woods from forest for making Langar. And, Guruji everyday traveled 3 Kos (5miles) to get water from Byaas river for Guru Angad Dev Ji to bath. Guruji did his selfless services without even shrugging off of his age.
Fact: Guru Amar Das Ji’s brother’s Daughter-in-law, Bibi Amro, was daughter of 2nd Sikh Guru, Guru Angad Dev ji. Although, Guru Amar Das Ji got Guru Gaddi from his devotion and Seva towards Guru Angad Dev Ji.
Guru Amar Das Ji built a Baoli (a place to bath) with 84 stairs in Goindwal, Amritsar. Guruji announced if anyone would bath in it and do “Path” of “Japji Sahib” on each stair with devotion, that person would be free from the birth-death cycle.
Guruji also told people to stop “Sati Prtha” (In which, a widow was forced to burn herself alive with her dead husband), and “Pardah Prtha” (in which, married women were forced to cover their faces to avoid other men to see them). Guru Amar Das Ji made people realize about these unethical practices.
As a matter of fact, Shri Guru Amar Das Ji gave message about not to judge someone from his/her caste. Its example is itself Shri Guru Amar Das Ji. As, Guruji set her daughter’s, Bibi Bhani Ji’s, marriage with his true devotee, Bhai Jetha Ji without asking him his caste. Even though Bhai Jetha Ji do the work to sell boiled chickpea to make a living.
Bhai Jetha Ji in future was trusted by Shri Guru Amar Das Ji with Guru Gaddi and became 4th Sikh Guru. In fact, Guru Amar Das Ji changed Bhai Jetha’s name to Guru Ram Das Ji.

On the date of 1 September 1574, Shri Guru Amar Das Ji passed away from this world, by transferring his divine energy to the 4th Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Ram Das Ji. Waheguru Ji.
